Obituary

Obituary for Darrell Ross

Darrell Lee Ross, 81, of Monmouth, Oregon, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2020, surrounded by his family and friends.

Darrell was born on October 16, 1938 in Omaha, Nebraska. Darrell and his family lived in Nebraska, Portland, OR and Southern California before ultimately settling in Medford, Oregon. Darrell graduated from Medford Senior High School in Medford, Oregon and was part of the graduating class of 1956. Darrell then went on to attend Oregon State University where he graduated in 1961 with a degree in Business Administration.

Upon graduation from Oregon State, Darrell went to work for Mobil Oil Company where he spent the first few years of his formative professional career building a solid foundation for business concepts that would serve him well as he would later go into business for himself. After leaving Mobil Oil Company, Darrell began “second career”, in the restaurant industry, going to work with his family at the Sizzler Family Steak Houses. In 1978, Darrell started the D.L. Ross Company headquartered in Eugene, OR. Darrell ran his business in Oregon for almost 30 years and built lifelong friends and memories with thousands of individuals in the restaurant industry across the state.

Upon retirement in 2005, Darrell spent some of the best years at his beloved home in Blue River, OR on the banks of the McKenzie River. There he became a part of the small community and always enjoyed visits from his children and grandchildren. For the past 5 years, Darrell has called Monmouth, Oregon home.

Darrell was an avid fan of all things “Oregon State” and called his allegiance with the school one of his proudest accomplishments and best memories. He was a long-time season ticket holder for the football and basketball teams. In the past few years, Darrell was able to fulfill his dream of seeing a few parts of the world that were always on his “to see” list. Italy, France, Spain and the Western half of the U.S. and Canada by train were a few of the highlights.

Darrell was predeceased by his parents Ed and Iris Ross. He is survived by his sister, Sally Plumley and brother-in-law Neil Plumley of Monmouth, Oregon and their children Jeff Plumley and Sara Breyman (David) of Dallas, OR. Darrell is survived by his children, daughter, Heather (Lexington, KY) and her children Wesley, Hope and Hannah Lawrence – son, Cameron (Salem, OR) and son, Greg Ross (Dana – Kansas City, MO) and their children Grant and Jackson Ross. Aunt Lois Vitek (Keizer, OR) and cousins Norma Vitek Guile (Keizer, OR) and Monte Runkle (Stayton, OR).

Darrell and I started with Mobil Oil on the same day and went through training together and then were both assigned to Saramento, CA. From that we became lasting friends. We would talk on the phone often to "catch Up". I was very sad to hear of his passing. God Speed good friend
