Obituary

Obituary for Donald Leroy Fishel

Donald Leroy Fishel passed away on August 15, 2020 in Dallas, Oregon at the age of 81. He was born on January 26, 1939 in Whitefish, Montana to Marion & Annie (Casanova) Fishel. He was the 9th of 10 children.

Don grew up in the Whitefish, Kalispell area. After high school he joined the Navy in 1958 and was in the submarine service as an electrician. He was Honorably discharged in 1962.

After being discharged he worked for the telephone Co in San Diego, California 4 years before moving back to Whitefish, Mt. He continued his telephone company work there until transferring to Lebanon, Or in 1977 where he met his loving wife, Joanne. He retired in 1999.
Don enjoyed working with wood and often made gifts for his family - everything from pens, bowls, lamps to ice cream scoops! He also enjoyed being outside in the yard, growing big beautiful gardens. His grandchildren loved corn from ‘Grandpa’s garden’, and he always seemed to have a crossword puzzle going. He also enjoyed camping with his family and friends. Many wonderful memories were made on camping trips! He loved his family so much and always had time for his grandchildren - whether it was eating an ice cream bar together outside - or letting them ‘help’ with the garden.

Don loved Jesus with all of his heart and found peace and confidence in the hope He gives. He was very kind and had a great sense of humor. At church he was known as the “candy man.” He always seemed to have candy in his pockets for the kids and ‘kids at heart’ - slipping them a treat as he greeted them with a handshake. Don loved to laugh and share jokes; he had many - for all occasions. Even at his weakest, he still shared a laugh with his hospice team. He loved to make people smile and he had a way of making you feel loved and important.

He will be greatly missed and always remembered - as he loved, led, and served his family so well.

Don was preceded in death by his son, Gregg and siblings, Bob, Jim, Kenny, Bill, Helen & Lucy. He is survived by his wife Joanne, children - Stephen & wife Rochelle, Karen, Debbie & husband Darand, Mike & wife Maki, many grandchildren and great grandchildren and his sisters, Marie, Reba and Carol.

Debbie and Joanne, sorry for your loss. I knew him to see him, but guess I never shook his hand. I didn't know he was the Candy Man.
